~Apple Espalier~

In our garden Stan has made an
apple espalier for us.
An espalier is a fruit tree or ornamental shrub whose branches are trained
to grow flat against a wall,
supported on a lattice
or framework of stakes.
It's origin is the 17th century from the French.
I love the way the apples grow on it.

  5. Just gorgeous, Jody and Stan! I learned how to graft fruit trees a few years ago, and put in an espaliered Belgian Fence of apple and pear trees in our backyard. I love it because you don't need any ladders to pick the fruit--the trees are only around 6 feet tall. It looks like you've got a sturdy wire structure for the tree to grow on, which is just perfect. I love it--so glad to know there's someone else who enjoys espalier, too!
